📌 6K Additive Wins $2M Defense Contract to Localize Critical Metal Powders

In a significant move for U.S. advanced manufacturing and supply chain security, metal powder producer 6K Additive has been awarded a Phase II contract worth approximately $2 million. The 18-month project, funded by the Department of Defense, focuses on a critical mission: recovering and repurposing discarded metals from U.S. military depots to create a domestic source for high-grade powders.

The targeted materials—nickel, titanium, tungsten, and niobium—are all strategically vital yet largely imported. With China dominating tungsten supply and titanium imports flagged as a national security concern, this initiative looks inward. Instead of new mining, the program will convert scrap and spent components from existing military sites into certified feedstock for advanced manufacturing, including additive manufacturing.

The scale of the opportunity is vast. Aviation maintenance depots alone generate over 60,000 pounds of mixed metal scrap weekly. 6K Additive’s process will collect this material from Defense Logistics Agency facilities and transform it through a proprietary, multi-stage method:

The resulting powders will be rigorously tested against benchmarks for virgin metals. The project also explores automation with a robotic sorting system and will conduct cold spray experiments to see if the upcycled powders can be used for component repair, extending the lifecycle of military hardware.

Frank Roberts, CEO of 6K Additive, emphasized the strategic imperative: “The U.S. Government has made it clear that to advance our defense readiness we cannot rely on geopolitically sensitive regions… By upcycling domestic scrap from DoD stockpiles, we are creating a circular, secure, and sustainable supply chain.”

This contract is part of a broader trend and a growing portfolio of government support for 6K Additive, including prior grants and loans totaling tens of millions of dollars. It aligns with a wider federal push to onshore production of critical materials, as seen with other companies like IperionX, which secured a separate contract to build a fully integrated domestic titanium supply chain.

For creators and engineers in the additive manufacturing space, developments like these highlight the increasing importance of material science and sustainable sourcing. As the industry evolves, having access to reliable, high-quality materials is paramount for successful projects. This is why platforms offering premium STL files and trusted resources are so valuable to the community.
