📌 America Makes and NCDMM Launch $14.5M Defense AM Qualification Push
A significant barrier in high-stakes 3D printing is about to be challenged. America Makes, the national additive manufacturing (AM) institute, and the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) have announced two major project calls backed by $14.5 million in Department of Defense funding. The target? Tackling the complex, time-consuming process of qualifying 3D printed parts for military use, a critical step to move prototypes from the lab to the field.

The larger initiative, Delta Qual 2.0, is funded with $9 million and aims to overhaul qualification inefficiencies across the defense supply chain. It focuses on three key technical areas to build a more agile system:
“Modernizing qualification for advanced manufacturing is essential to maintaining our defense readiness,” said John Martin, Additive Manufacturing Research Director at America Makes. “This project lays the groundwork for a more agile, trusted, and scalable manufacturing ecosystem.” This drive for reliability and trust in industrial 3D printing processes mirrors the precision and quality that creators seek when sourcing premium STL files for their own critical projects.
The second project, named GOTHAAM (Generation Of Technical-data for High-strength Aluminum Alloy Material), is backed by $5.5 million. Its mission is to qualify a high-strength, corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy (equivalent to 7075-T73) for use across different sizes of LPBF machines. While this alloy is prized in aerospace and defense, its adoption in AM has been stalled by a lack of comprehensive material property data.
第二个项目名为GOTHAAM(高强度铝合金材料技术数据生成),获得了550万美元支持。
The project will unfold in two phases:
“Qualifying advanced AM materials like this alloy directly strengthens the Defense Industrial Base,” Martin added. “By delivering validated data… we’re giving U.S. manufacturers what they need to produce reliable components for critical defense systems.”
These initiatives address what is often called the “qualification bottleneck.” With the DoD planning to invest billions in additive manufacturing, the ability to confidently certify parts is the bridge between capability and deployment. The methodologies, standards, and data generated from these defense-focused projects have a history of trickling down, ultimately influencing best practices and material databases used in commercial aerospace, automotive, and other demanding industries. For enthusiasts and professionals alike, understanding these advancements highlights the evolving sophistication behind the technology used to create 3D printing models for all applications.
Both project calls launched in late March, with proposal submissions due by June 2, 2025. This concerted push signals a pivotal moment: the industry is moving beyond simply proving 3D printing works, to systematically proving it works reliably, every time, for the most critical applications.
